Venice Architecture Biennial

August 18, 2026

We would like to share that our collaborative research on earthen architecture was featured at the Pavilion of Türkiye at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia. Curated by Ceren Erdem and Bilge Kalfa around the theme “Grounded” (Yerebasan), the exhibition reimagines earth as a living archive, natural intelligence, and a dynamic laboratory for contemporary spatial practices. Together with Fulya Akipek and our interdisciplinary teams, we contributed to the pavilion with three architectural prototypes: Digital design and fabrication…

Intra)/value

August 16, 2026

The group exhibition 2 Years 10 Meters, curated by Natalia Schmidt, opened on April 24, 2024, at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. My name was also included in the exhibition due to the projection graphics in Didem Yalınay’s artwork Intra)/value. This was another step in Didem’s long-term project. She hated being called a “Digital Artist.” She produced wonderful works with Seçkin Maden. I was fortunate enough to accompany her as a modest collaborator on one of her pieces….

Robotic Earthcrafts Student Project: ZOM

November 6, 2018

This project is developed in the summer workshop titled Robotic Earthcrafts conducted at İstanbul Bilgi University Architectural Design graduate program. Students call this project “ZOM”. Students are Murat Sökün, Zeynep Çakmak, and Özlem Güven. We organized the workshop together with Fulya Akipek and Hülya Oral. You can find more details about the workshop here. In this project, a simple robot code created the EPS molds of the rammed-earth module. Below are some of the photos of the design and construction…

Growing an Architectural System

November 3, 2018

This paper covers ongoing research titled “Growing an Architectural System”. It is an interdisciplinary work relating permaculture studies with computational design and production technologies. It includes testing some issues of performance via full-scale prototypes. Growing Pots is the first study we will mention in the paper. It is about the design of a micro-permaculture system and 3d printed products realized by students of an elective course. On the other hand, in the second part of the paper, we explain the…

Common-action Gardens #2

January 8, 2018

It has been nearly 2 years since we designed and produced this garden. Similar to the first version, Common-action Gardens #2 is injected in formal park layouts. We build it for recreation as garden structures with an aim to support the “preserve, sustain, and share” idea. Thus, we expect to bring people together while producing. These gardens organize sustainable models for communal living by integrating raised beds, planting holes, water bowls, compost holes, seedboxes, tool pots, niches for animals, and…

Common-action Gardens #1

August 8, 2017

COMMON action GARDENS I is an urban garden structure that is exhibited and still in use in Karaalioglu Park as part of the 3rd Architecture Biennial Programme in Antalya. These structures are injected in formal park layouts as edible gardens whose aim is to support the “preserve, sustain, and share” concept and to bring people together while producing. These gardens organize sustainable models for living by integrating raised beds, planting holes, water bowls, compost holes, seedboxes, tool pots, niches for…

A-Chord Folding Structure

April 12, 2015

The A-Chord folding structure was developed and constructed for the World Wood Day 2015 event in İstanbul. The structure had fifty wooden struts of 4 cm X 4cm with changing heights from 200 cm to 230 cm. Two struts joined with a hinge enabled the folding motion of the structure. Thus, the nearby unit is folding in the opposite direction. The Grasshopper model generated all construction details and drawings automatically. As a result, these data enabled the revisions needed for structural experiments. In…

Life Sciences

April 30, 2014

Here is the video of the project Life Sciences, designed together with Fulya Akipek, and engineered by Filika Interactive. To be presented in the 2014 Vitra Contemporary Architecture Series Exhibition, Life Sciences is an interactive project produced by Filika Interactive using Openframeworks following the conceptual and visual design by Fulya Özsel Alipek and Tuğrul Yazar. The project is an interactive presentation of the content obtained from the interviews made with primary education students by artists in a visual structure that resembles a…

Life Sciences

March 18, 2014

Vitra Contemporary Architecture Series #3, Life Sciences Project by Fulya Akipek and Tuğrul Yazar. The installation is a part of the exhibition called “Dreams to Realities” at İstanbul Modern Art Museum, curated by Şebnem Yalınay Çinici. Filika coded our design, an algorithm that generates rhizomatic structures of typography, that include words of children about “education”. Here is a preview image: A video is posted here. While systems aim to educate masses to achieve ideal standards, can the individual be a…
