Attractors

March 7, 2012

Today’s subject was closely related to the one last week; the data list and data tree management. Creating suitable data structures for our purposes is one of the tricky parts of whole Grasshopper experiments. We’ve developed a grid of objects, somehow associated with another one (a curve). Strong emphasis was on the way of thinking, getting back and forth on the process, and the re-definition of data lists. Especially, this in-class exercise would help you understand basic design techniques in…

Point Attractors Revisited

February 29, 2012

This is the basic definition of one point attractor on a grid of points. Here, the fundamentals of data tree matching can be studied. A hexagonal grid is exploded into points and new polygons are created there. Instead of a standard point distance relation to polygon size, this time the distance factor affects the rotational angle of these polygons. Although the structure of data trees is getting complicated, this has no difficulty in such definition, because the operational complexity is still very…

Parquet Deformation of Star Patterns

February 3, 2012

This is another starting point for pattern generation study in a dataflow environment. I tried to implement the parquet deformation of Islamic patterns in Grasshopper. I studied Hankin’s method of Islamic Pattern generation. Then I tried to simulate his process beginning with basic regular tiling (regular hexagonal tessellation). Craig S. Kaplan (here) explains this and other methods in his dissertation. A Simple Foundation We have already experienced the result of exploding any hexagonal grid, shifting its points with the help…

Basic Curve Attractor

January 31, 2012

This study includes three main topics related to the basics of Grasshopper. The first one is the surface subdivision, the parametric definition of a surface component, that is, in this case, a simple pyramidal object. The second thing is the associative behavior of surface components with an external parameter, that is another entity in space; a curve. Traditionally, this is simply demonstrated by The important thing here is to find a method to compare each object (here it is the…

Graph Waves with Attractor Geodesic

January 25, 2012

The regular component design technique can be further improved by adding several manipulations. The purpose of this study was to create a surface component that reacts to an inherent parameter (actually a geodesic curve on the surface). However, within the process of parametric modeling, diverse formal potentials emerged. Most interesting results are achieved by adding a graph parameter to control the waves of reaction while splitting the surface as stripes. It is created in the recently updated version (0.8.00066) of…

Custom Graphics on VPL

January 10, 2012

This was an interesting challenge for me to find out if an architect can use Visual Programming Languages (VPL’s) also for graphical purposes? Now, I would say “not exactly” because this definition took much time than I expected. The aim was to create an algorithm for a business card design that has variable outputs. Each card should be different, but without using any randomization. This project is suitable for more development because now it is only producing one sequence of…

Grid Tearing

January 6, 2012

Here, I used a curve to accomplish grid tearing. It’s straightforward, and from an educational perspective, this exercise includes several potentials on vector arithmetics and graph manipulation techniques. As a design domain, this definition stresses the use of associative entities in a parametric model. Any primitive or complex entity may evoke different parameters in others. The beauty in the simplicity of these algorithms still amaze me.
