Robotic Earthcrafts Student Project: “ZOM”

This project is developed in the summer workshop titled Robotic Earthcrafts conducted at İstanbul Bilgi University Architectural Design graduate program. Students call this project “ZOM”. Students are Murat Sökün, Zeynep Çakmak, and Özlem Güven. We organized the workshop together with Fulya Akipek[1] and Hülya Oral[2]. You can find more details about the workshop here[3]. In this project, a simple robot code created the EPS molds of the rammed-earth module. Below are some of the photos of the design and construction process.

Below is the screenshot of the robot program. The design developed by Murat Sökün consists of two symmetrical pieces cut with one movement of the hot wire cutter. We used this to cut the mold pieces by using a hotwire cutter tool. Students used wooden sticks to support fragile areas in the mold. In addition to the compressed earth units coming out of the mold, EPS mold parts were also able to participate in the final composition of a porous wall.

Overall the Robotic Earthcrafts workshop was a success in terms of introducing architecture graduates to robotic fabrication. We tried to blend the design process with the fabrication technique. We believe that this opens new possibilities and also causes new limitations.
