Modeling the Gyroid Solid

Gyroid is a popular triply-periodic minimal surface[1]. Although it is a mathematical entity, designers and architects like its approximations very much. We used an interpretation of Gyroid in the rammed-earth structure: “Common-action Wall[2]” in 2017. In that project, we utilized its spatial quality of dividing the space into two intertwining and symmetrical volumes. By making one of these volumes solid, I left the other void. So, in this tutorial, I am going to explain modeling the Gyroid Solid by utilizing a quick Rhino Python[3] code and several basic Rhino commands. Since the fundamental patch of the Gyroid has a special edge curve, I draw that by using its formula.

This package includes the Rhinoceros (3dm) model of the Gyroid fundamental module, explained in the tutorial video. In addition, the zip includes the Rhino Python code I used in the tutorial video. Plus, a Grasshopper implementation of the code which draws all four edges of the fundamental patch is included. I created these files by native Rhino, Rhino Python, and Grasshopper commands. So, no add-ons or plug-ins are necessary to use them. The model file includes closed solid polysurfaces. So, they are ready for 3d printing.
