Cut & Fold & Craft Student Works

The Cut & Fold & Craft exercise is the mid-term project for last year’s Computation-based Basic Design Studio[1] at İstanbul Bilgi University Faculty of Architecture[2]. I really enjoyed the technique called Kirigami[3]. Most of the projects are not flat-foldable but they are all cut from a single sheet of paper. This technique seemed a little bit limiting at the beginning, but the students managed to design very interesting compositions in the end. Below are some of the student works. I selected them from the mid-term project submissions;

Beshr Jemieh

Saliha Ekiz

Uygar Tufan

Although they look beautiful, these Cut & Fold & Craft designs can be challenging and limiting. However, this limitation became an interesting challenge to discuss on the 2d and 3d relationships and geometry. This website[4] and the works[5] of Elod Beregszaszi were very good inspirations for us. We did one in-class exercise on ullagami, and then proceeded with student projects. The results the students achieved by punching and folding the plate without breaking it apart were indeed successful. We asked them to build a 30x50x15cm plate (unfolded) with multiple “spines” and submit their unfolded pattern and the final product (from 300gr/m3 bristol paper) separately. It may be possible to develop this work in the future.

The Computation-based Basic Design studio team of 2017 is; Bahar Avanoğlu, Bilge Bal, Bulut Cebeci, Can Sucuoğlu, Canan Erten, Caner Bilgin, Cansu Cürgen, Ece Çakır, Ertunç Hünkar, Gamze Gündüz, İdil Karababa, Cemal Koray Bingöl, Leyla İlman, Merve Gül Özokçu, Nur Gürbüz, Salih Küçüktuna, Seçkin Maden, Şebnem Yalınay, and Tuğrul Yazar.
