Basketball Cup

This is the basketball cup that won the design contest organized in 2018 by the Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF[1]). Nadide Ebru Yazar and Mete Yazar proposed this idea, and I modeled that in Rhino and rendered it with Neon. Among more than 150 designs, the jury chose our design due to its dynamic formal expression. Cage-editing[2] was very efficient in creating this kind of free-form surface. However, the production phase becomes a lot challenging when we realized that metal printing would result in an extremely heavy object. Also, I had to join the whole model as a single polysurface in order to print it properly.

Below is a photo of the 1/2 prototype, made by Aslan Ruso. Production research was conducted to realize this object with metal while making it as light as possible. I had to re-made the model to include the material thickness and an interior void. As you can see in the image, the artifacts of 3d printing were too much. However, the research led by TBF’s initiative had a good and clean result.

In 2018, Fenerbahçe Doğuş won the title by defeating TOFAŞ, winning the final series 4-1. Here are some images of our cup;

In 2019 and 2020, Anadolu Efes took the title. Our design is the official cup of TBF, given in different championships since 2018. In the above image, you can also see the smaller versions of the basketball cup given to each member of the team.
